Sometime last month, the cozy gallery space at See Scape pub on Nimmanhemin Soi 17 was kindly entrusted to Wunderspaze. Not wanting to be greedy, we decided that it was a good idea to share this space and opportunity with other creative people with great ideas. Well, here they are! So come and join us for three consecutive weekends filled with ideas and best of all, these parties are all FREE!!!

Chakkrit Chimnok is one of the fast emerging contemporary talents from Chiangmai, Thailand whose work has been represented at the Thrid Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (Japan). Chakkrit works with recycled materials and loves toying with the audiences’ perceived sense towards materials and form.

For Action Parties #2, Chakkrit collaborates with the Myth suck Group in a four-hour, sound based performance where audience participation is key to their ‘action’. And you don’t have to be a musician to join their party!

จักกริช ฉิมนอก เป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินร่วมสมัยจากเชียงใหม่ที่เริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างรวดเร็ว งานของเขาได้ร่วมแสดงใน Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale ครั้งที่3 ที่ญี่ปุ่น จักกริชทำงานโดยใช้วัสดุรีไซเคิลและชอบที่จะเล่นกับแนวความคิดของคนดูเรื่องวัสดุและรูปทรง

ใน Action Parties#2 จักกริชร่วมกับ Myth suck Group จะใช้เวลา 4 ชั่วโมงทำการแสดงที่เกิดจากเสียงผู้ชมที่อยากเข้ามามีส่วนร่วมกับการแสดง จะเป็นกุญแจสำคัญใน Action นี้ ที่สำคัญคุณไม่ต้องเป็นนักดนตรีก็ร่วม Action กับพวกเขาได้

Soy… yo

How often do we get a chance to witness a ‘flamenco fiesta’ around this corner of the world? Phanat, a young choreographer and dancer, picked up flamenco from the Santa Maria Flamenco Institute in Chile. He also represented Thailand at the 9th CSTD Asia-Pacific Dance Competition in Singapore in 2007.

Soy…yo will present a fusion of modern and flamenco dances, narrating the dilemma of sexualities. Through this action, Phanat and his friends most importantly intends to collect donations for the benefit Dhammapakorn Old Folk’s Home here in Chiangmai.

บ่อยแค่ไหนที่เราจะได้มีโอกาสชมฟลาเมงโก ฟิเอสตา ในมุมนี้ของโลก พนัสเป็นนักเต้นและนักออกแบบท่าเต้นที่เริ่มเรียนฟลาเมงโกจาก สถาบัน Santa Maria Flamenco ประเทศชิลี เขาเป็นตัวแทนประเทศไทยเข้าร่วมแข่งขันในรายการ CSTD Asia-Pacific Dance Competition ครั้งที่ 9 ที่จัด ณ ประเทศสิงคโปร์ ในปี2550

Soy..yo นำเสนอการเต้นแบบผสมผสานระหว่าง ฟลาเมงโกและโมเดิร์นดานซ์ โดยเล่าเรื่องราวความว้าวุ่นของการเป็นเพศหญิง-เพศชาย Action ครั้งนี้ พนัสและเพื่อนๆตั้งใจที่จะรับบริจาคเงินเพื่อนำไปช่วยเหลือบ้านพักคนชราธรรมปกรณ์ในเชียงใหม่

ศิลปิน : มาร์ค ซัลวาตัส (ฟิลิปปินส์)

Mark Salvatus is a multi media artist based in Manila and Lucban, Philippines whose works varies from drawings, installations, photography, intervention, graffiti to participatory and site specific projects. Currently taking MFA at University of Santo Tomas in Manila, his works has been exhibited in different galleries and museums in the Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Spain and Turkey.

With ISSUES, Mark’s will lead the formation of a ‘support group’ with the audience (we are guessing something similar to Alcoholic Anonymous….). As a reflective pool and ‘picket’ session of ‘personal issues’, anything from small petty ones to those big and serious, ISSUES could be the free therapy session you have always wanted to join!

มาร์ค ซัลวาตัสเป็นศิลปินที่ทำงานด้านสื่อผสมอยู่ในกรุงมะนิลาและเมืองลุกบัน ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ งานของเขามีหลายรูปแบบตั้งแต่ การวาดรูป ศิลปะจัดวาง การถ่ายภาพ กราฟฟิตี้ มีทั้งที่ทำงานร่วมกับโปรเจ็คต่างๆและที่เป็นโปรเจ็คของเขาเอง ปัจจุบันเขาศึกษาต่อในปริญญาโททางด้านศิลปะที่ University of Santo Tomas ในกรุงมะนิลา งานของเขาได้ร่วมแสดงในแกลอรี่และพิพิธภัณฑ์ต่างๆทั้งในฟิลิปปินส์ เกาหลีใต้ ญี่ปุ่น สเปนและตุรกี

ใน ISSUES ของเขาครั้งนี้ มาร์คจะเป็นผู้นำกลุ่มบำบัด โดยที่มีคนชมเป็นผู้ร่วมบำบัด (เดาว่าคงเหมือนกลุ่มบำบัดอาการติดเหล้า..ประมาณนั้น) โดยจะมีช่วงการเล่าประสบการณ์ ช่วงการต่อต้าน ในประเด็นชีวิตส่วนตัว อะไรก็ได้ตั้งแต่เรื่องขี้ประติ๋วจนถึงเรื่องใหญ่ๆและซีเรียส ISSUES อาจเป็นกิจกรรมบำบัด บรรเทาความรู้สึกลึกๆ ที่คุณอาจจะอยากลองดูซักครั้งก็ได้

HELP the Artist

ศิลปิน : ซาลิฮา โมฮัมเม็ด โอมาร์ (สิงคโปร์)

A trained educator and currently undergoing more training herself at the National Institute of Education, Singapore, Salihah tackles art on regular and very communal grounds. She was one of the young artists who collaborated with heavyweights Cheo Chai Hiang and Amanda Heng for the RAISED project, a 2-month long engagement with foreign labourers on an open field on the Little India district as part of Art Singapore festival (2007).

HELP the Artist seeks audiences to ‘help’ Salihah (the artist) in her process of art making. So all you skeptics of contemporary art, this is your chance for a head-on confrontation with an artist, an opportunity to collaborate, motivate or criticize, the choice is yours!

จากการเป็นอาจารย์และศึกษาอยู่ที่ สถาบันการศึกษาแห่งชาติ ในสิงคโปร์ ซาลิฮามักจะใช้สื่อศิลปะเพื่อชุมชนและสังคม เธอเป็นหนึ่งในศิลปินรุ่นเยาว์ที่ได้ร่วมทำงานกับศิลปินหัวกะทิอย่าง Cheo Chai Hiang และ Amanda Heng ในโปรเจ็คที่ชื่อว่า RAISED ในชุมชน little India ของสิงคโปร์ ซึ่งเป็นโปรเจ็คยาว 2 เดือน และเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ งาน Art Singapore festival ปี2550 ที่เรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับเหล่าแรงงานต่างด้าว

THANKSGIVING

Vajira is a published author of eight books and was the editor of ‘a day’ magazine from Bangkok in 2004-06. Since moving to Chiangmai two years ago, Vajira with his set-up Rabbithood, has been organizing ‘contemporary, urban and art’ based lifestyle happenings.

THANKSGIVING by Vajira invites you to take positive action against this ‘capitalist’ world that has convinced us to consume more and more each day; and through the inadvertent typhoon known as ‘advertising’, we have been further fooled to consume large amounts of ‘stuff’ some of which becomes a ‘white elephant’ soon after! Bring one such ‘’white elephant’ of yours down to his Action Party, trade it off with someone who might have a better use for it and rid yourselves of consumerist sin!

วชิราเป็นนักเขียนที่มีผลงานตีพิมพ์มาแล้ว 8 เล่ม และเคยเป็นบ.ก. นิตยสาร A day ตั้งแต่ปี 2547-2549 หลังจากที่ย้ายมาอยู่เชียงใหม่เมื่อ 2 ปีก่อน วชิราได้ก่อตั้ง Rabbithood เพื่อการสร้างเคลื่อนไหวในวิถีชีวิตศิลปะร่วมสมัยแบบคนเมือง

THANKSGIVING ของวชิรา ชวนทุกคนสร้าง action เชิงบวกเพื่อต่อต้านกระแสทุนนิยมที่ยั่วยุให้เราจับจ่ายมากขึ้นในแต่ละวันโดยใช้การกระหน่ำอย่างไม่รู้ตัวของสิ่งที่เรารู้จักกันว่า “การโฆษณา” ยิ่งไปกว่านั้นเรายังถูกล่อหลอกให้บริโภค “ วัตถุ” จำนวนมาก ซึ่งภายหลังกลายมาเป็นเพียงแค่ “สิ่งของเสริมบารมี” วชิราจึงต้องการให้เราเอา “วัตถุ”เหล่านั้น มาในงาน Action Party ของเขา เพื่อเอามาให้กับคนอื่นๆ ที่อาจจะสามารถใช้ประโยชน์กับมันได้มากกว่า และที่สำคัญ เพื่อเป็นการไถ่บาปทุนนิยมของเราเอง!!!

ศิลปิน : วิชญ์พล ดิลกสัมพันธ์ และชมรมการแสดง มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ (ไทย)

Vichapon is a budding theatre director and second-year student in the Mass Communication department at Chiang Mai University. He was also responsible for the revival of the Chiang Mai University Drama Club with “Ruang Khong Chan Chang Mun Her” (leave it, it’s my business), performed on a street market on the university grounds after a five-year hiatus.

Have you ever wondered how a game of checkers would be actual entities with life and emotions? Well, Action on Bo(ar)d will simulate this possibility through a game spontaneously strategised and played out by characters in real life!

วิชญ์พล เป็นผู้กำกับละครเวทีดาวรุ่งและกำลังศึกษาอยู่ที่สาขาสื่อสารมวลชน มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ เขากำกับละครเวทีเรื่อง “เรื่องของฉัน ช่างมันเหอะ” ที่แสดงในงานถนนคนเดินในมหาวิทยาลัย ซึ่งเป็นการช่วยรื้อฟื้นชมรมการละครหลังจากที่ห่างหายไปถึง 5 ปี

เคยสงสัยบ้างมั้ยว่าจะเป็นอย่างไร ถ้าในเกมหมากฮอส หมากแต่ละตัวกลับมีชีวิตและความรู้สึกขึ้นมาจริงๆ

Action on บอ(ร์)ด จะทำให้มันเป็นจริงขึ้นมาได้โดยจะใช้การเดิมพันหมากฮอสแบบสดๆ และชุบชีวิตหมากแต่ละตัวให้เป็นตัวแทนบุคคลต่างๆที่มีอยู่จริง!

The Rundown
The first Performativity project presented video pieces by artists from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and The Philippines and was launched at Gallery VER in Bangkok in 2006. The project later toured several venues in Southeast Asia including universities around Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Several months prior to that, the Fine Arts faculty at Chulalongkorn University hosted a full day workshop on performance and video art involving undergraduates from Bangkok, Silpakorn and Chulalongkorn universities by Thai film-maker Som Sutthirat and Singaporean artist/curator Khairuddin Hori.

Derived from combining Performance and TV, Performativity draws its inspiration from MTV (music television since the 1980s) and historical, performance based videos which grew out of Europe and America in the 1960s and 70s as exemplified by artists such as John Baldessari, Marina Abramovich, Bruce Nauman and Yoko Ono.

Neo Intuition, Slight Repartee the theme for this second installment of Performativity, initiates participation of emerging creative talents from Southeast Asia working in various fields of the arts (dance, visual arts, literature, music, design e.t.c.) to respond intuitively to contemporary social crises which directly affects their personal lives. Departing from their physical bodies, projected by means of an eventual video based artwork; this re-visitation of an old medium allows latitudinal extension of their regular creative faculties (e.g. writers with writing or musician with musical composition), especially if integrated with today’s hi-tech and/or yesterday’s lo-tech craft, electronic and audio-visual technologies.

In addition, this year, 1000 Singapore Dollars would be given out as Juror’s Prize to an outstanding video piece by a panel of jurors invited by Wunderspaze.

Specificity of Theme
Neo Intuition, Slight Repartee looks for visceral responses of artists to changes in their immediate social, economic, political and/or cultural surroundings that directly affect their personal developments.

Who should participate?
Southeast Asian dancers, visual artists, writers, musicians, theatre practitioners, new media artists e.t.c.

Interpretation of Southeast Asian status
Participating artists must either be citizens, hold permanent resident status in a Southeast Asian (ASEAN) nation or have lived and worked in Southeast Asia for a minimum of 5 years. Collaborations amongst artists who fit our interpretation of the Southeast Asian status are allowed.

Nature and duration of artwork to be submitted
Artworks (accompanied by the submission form) should be submitted in single-channel, DVD, CD (Quicktime or Avi) or Mini DV tape (PAL format) and have a total run time of no longer than 8 minutes each. Subtitles should be included for works containing dialogues not spoken in English.

Maximum number of submissions
Each artist (or collaborating artists) is allowed to submit a maximum of 2 video pieces.

Synopsis of artwork
A brief synopsis of not more than 200 words should accompany each submitted video.

Juror’s prize
An independent panel of jurors appointed by Wunderspaze will select an artwork for the Juror’s Prize of 1000 Singapore Dollars.

Submission dateline
Videos and printed copy of submission form is to be received at Wunderspaze by 9 June 2008. Please fill up ALL fields in the submission form in Microsoft Word. If you are submitting more than one work, please use one form for each piece of videos submitted.

Confirmation of selected works
24 June 2008. Artists will be notified by email when their works are selected for screening.

Release of rights
By submitting video artworks for Performativity 2, all artists agree to lend the rights of publication, broadcast and/or any other purposes necessary (except commercial) for Performativity 2 including its future installments to its curators and project partners. Please note that all videos submitted will not be returned and will be kept by Wunderspaze for archival purposes.

Here’s a familiar situation: you want to do something – a gig, a show, a performance or an exhibition – but one of the first issues to resolve is GETTING A SPACE. Well, you are in luck! See Scape, located on one of the hip Nimmanhemindra Sois has given us its gallery space for several weekends in March and we have decided to GIVE IT TO YOU. Yes, we want you to take action and submit proposals to use the gallery space for Action Parties #2. Wunderspaze is looking for six engaging actions to be fulfilled within the duration of any of the chosen slots (details below).

SOME IDEA/S OF WHAT WUNDERSPAZE IS LOOKING FOR...
WUNDERSPAZE สนใจกิจกรรมแบบไหน

The key objective is to use the space within the specified duration and make an ‘action’. What could it be? The quirkier, more interesting interpretations of this are what we are looking for but they have to be feasible and realizable (and it’s our prerogative to decide that). Coax us, we are open to unexpected ideas – for example, a photographer wants to turn the gallery into a studio and hold a wedding shoot where the bride and groom are exhibitionists who wouldn’t mind an audience for company at their shoot. Artists, art groups, students, dancers, musicians, theatre practitioners, photographers, video artists, designers, art managers, curators, NGOs or anyone with an art-related ‘action’ idea are eligible to apply.

กุญแจสําคัญคือการใช้พื้นที่ในเวลาที่จํากัดและสร้าง “action” แต่ต้องเป็นแอคชั่นที่เท่ น่าสนใจ สร้างสรรค์ เป็นกิจกรรมที่ทําได้จริง (ซึ่งเราจะเป็นผู้คัดเลือกอีกที)

ลองดูนะคะ เราเปิดรับไอเดียใหม่ๆแบบที่ใครก็คาดไม่ถึง อย่าง ช่างภาพต้องการเปลี่ยนแกลอรี่ให้เป็นสตูดิโอถ่ายภาพแต่งงาน โดยให้เจ้าบ่าวเจ้าสาว เป็นแบบ แล้วอาจมีคนดูร่วมอยู่ในเฟรมด้วย

PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
ข้อแนะนําสําหรับการร่วมกิจกรรม

1. Before submitting a proposal, please refer to the pages below for details of the gallery space, including floor plan, as well as rules for using the gallery. Actions carried out should comply to these rules.

ก่อนเสนอผลงาน กรุณาศึกษารายละเอียดของแกลอรี่ แบบแปลน และกฎการใช้สถานที่ โดยกิจกรรมที่จะถูกจัดขึ้นจะต้องเป็นไปตาม ระเบียบด้านล่างนี้

2. For the duration of Action Parties, the gallery becomes a public space; therefore actions proposed should be non-chargeable/ticketed. Funds however, can be collected from voluntary members of the audience.

ในช่วงจัดกิจกรรม Action Parties จะถือว่าแกลอรีเป็นที่ของ ส่วนรวม ฉะนั้นกิจกรรมใดๆจะต้องกระทําโดยไม่หวังผลกําไรหรือไม่มีค่าบัตรผ่านประตูใดๆทั้งสิ้น แต่สามารถจัดทําเป็นกล่องรับบริจาค ตามกําลังศรัทธาของคนดูได้

3. As an independent initiative, Wunderspaze is not in a position to provide funds or material resources for activities proposed. Instead, applicants should propose ideas that they can carry out fully on their own. This includes equipment provision and advanced technical support.

4. Successful applicants should be aware that they are fully responsible for the actions they plan to carry out.

ผู้เสนอโครงการที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกต้องสามารถรับผิดชอบกิจกรรม ทั้งหมดที่จะเกิดขึ้นจนสําเร็จลุล่วง

5. Applicants should submit a brief outline of their proposed project (max. 250 words) as well as a written profile. Samples of past works/projects would be useful for our evaluation.

ผู้สนใจเข้าร่วมจะต้องเขียนบรรยายโครงการ (ไม่เกิน 250 คํา) ประวัติส่วน และตัวอย่างงานที่ผ่านมาเพื่อใช้ประกอบในการพิจารณา

6. Although Wunderspaze would provide publicity support, our resources at the moment are limited. Hence we appreciate it when participants also drum up their own publicity machine in addition to ours.

ถึงแม้ว่า Wunderspaze จะมีส่วนช่วยเรื่องการประชาสัมพันธ์ แต่เนื่องด้วยในขณะนี้ยังมีข้อจํากัดอยู่ ฉะนั้น ผู้ร่วมโครงการสามารถมีส่วนร่วมในการประชาสัมพันธ์ด้วย

7. Eventual action-takers must agree to participate in all media publicity efforts initiated by Wunderspaze.

ผู้ได้รับคัดเลือกจะต้องเข้าร่วมในการโฆษณาประชาสัมพันธ์ต่างๆที่ Wunderspaze จัดขึ้น

Money Talks (Drinks on the House) / Duration: 3 hours

In her ‘action’, Audrey invited members of the arts community to come together and talk about money. She provided some snacks and drinks placed on several sets of tables and chairs in an informal setting for people to sit around in. At one of these tables was a ‘piggy bank’, a container that the attendees could drop some funds which Audrey promised to give away to a deserving artist. In just 3 hours, she collected about $1000 from the attendees. This ingenious ‘action’ created an arts fund ‘by the arts community for artists’.

ใน ‘แอคชั่น’ ของออเดรย์ ออเดรย์เชิญศิลปินจากหลายๆกลุ่มมานั่งถกกันเรื่องเกี่ยวกับเงิน มีของว่างและเครื่องดื่มบริการบนโต๊ะที่เซตไว้ จัดเก้าอี้ให้คนนั่งล้อมวงกัน โต๊ะตัวหนึ่งมีกระปุกออมสินวางอยู่ โดยที่ผู้ร่วมพูดคุยสามารถหยอดเงิน ออเดรย์ตั้งใจนําไปให้ศิลปินอื่นๆ ที่ต้องการการสนับสนุนทางการเงิน . ในระยะเวลาเพียง 3 ชั่วโมง สามารถรวบรวมเงินได้ถึง 22,000 บาท
‘Action’ ง่ายๆแต่ได้ประโยชน์แบบนี้สามารถสร้างกองทุนศิลปะ ‘โดยชุมชนศิลปะเพื่อศิลปิน‘

Pun Tarts / Duration: 3 hours

Lil Pink Devil invited interested members of the public to register for a workshop in learning how to make traditional Pineapple tarts from his mother. These tarts, when done, had its usual star-patterned piece of garnish replaced with alphabetical ones. Placed next to each other, these alphabets form words, even sentences and ‘puns’. The participants went further and exercised their creativities by creating these Pineapple tarts in various shapes and sizes. At the end of the session, they get to bring the tarts home as edible artistic souvenirs.

Migrant Voices is an NGO (Non-Governmental Organisation) that acts as a support unit for blue-collared migrant workers in Singapore. As their ‘action’, Migrant Voices exhibited photographs depicting recreational activities of these workers shot by their own friends. At the same time, they also conducted video interviews with several gallery visitors revolving around personal experiences engaging with migrant workers in Singapore.

Migrant Voices เป็นกลุ่มเอ็นจีโอที่ทํางานเพื่อช่วยเหลือแรงงาน ผู้อพยพในสิงคโปร์ ใน ‘action’ ของเขา กลุ่ม Migrant Voice ได้จัดแสดงภาพถ่ายเกี่ยวกับกิจกรรมยามว่างของเหล่าแรงงานซึ่ง ถ่ายโดยแรงงานด้วยกันเอง ในวันแสดงงานยังมีการสัมภาษณ์ผู้ที่ เข้ามาร่วมชมงานเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวของพวกเค้าที่เกี่ยวข้องกับแรงงานผู้อพยพในสิงคโปร์

The Second Print Conference / Duration: 3 hours

The Lion City D-I-Y showed off D-I-Y culture in the graphic design of local punk bands and communities in an exhibition of their records, t-shirts, posters and zines. As part of their ‘action’, they also managed a ‘live’ demonstration of the silkscreen printing process predominantly used for their graphic works.

These are pictures of our former studio in lovely Siglap, Singapore. We had to leave at the end of 2007 because real estate prices on that little red dot went crazy! How crazy? Our rent went up by almost 300%!!!
